Dunhill Cigars is a British company that are known for their extremely high quality hand made cigars. While the Dunhill Cigars range originally came from Cuba, Dunhill had a huge disagreement with Cubatobacco, the Cuban state cigar company. As a result of these heated negotiations, Dunhill were forced to look elsewhere for the high quality tobacco they needed to manufacture Dunhill cigars.
Now Dunhill source their tobacco from all over the world. There is a preference for the fine tobaccos grown in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, but Dunhill are known to go as far afield as Cameroon to find tobacco that lives up to their high standards of smoking quality and fine flavor.
The Dunhill Nicaraguan Signed Range Robusto is a truly global cigar. While, as the name suggests, it’s handrolled in Nicaragua, the filler is a blend of fine tobaccos from both Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. The binder is from Cameroon.
You can tell right away that the Dunhill Robusto is a premium cigar. The quality and appearance of the construction are undeniably perfect. Some real skill and care has gone into the rolling of this cigar. The wrapper is a deep, rich mahogany colour, and the smell is a faint cedar blended with a high quality red tea.
Like all fine cigars, the Dunhill Robusto develops in flavor as it smokes. It begins with a faint leather flavor, mingled with a sweet hit of Belgian chocolate. There is also a deep and complex spicy note, with a dominant flavor of cinnamon. The cinnamon sweetness lingers on the palate after each puff. As the cigar develops, a more cedar dominant profile comes to the fore, and the cinnamon aftertaste continues. The Dunhill finishes with a milky coffee flavor which rounds off the cigar nicely.
As you can see, this is a truly complex cigar, like most in the Dunhill range. There are some really distinct and dramatic flavor changes as the cigar develops, which as all smokers know is a sign of the very highest quality cigar. The cigar works well with a deep, rich espresso coffee, or high quality white rum. I’d recommend Havana Club if it’s available where you are.
The delicious taste of the Dunhill Nicaraguan Signed Range Robusto is proof that Dunhill haven’t lost any of their talent for making fine cigars in making the jump from Cubans to a more international blend, and this change will please American smokers who can now get their hands on the entire Dunhill range without resorting to clandestine means.
Dunhill have a special talent for making a full flavored cigar that isn’t too strong. While the Robusto falls into the “medium to full” strength category, it’s definitely not one that should be reserved for extremely experienced smokers like other Robustos. A brave beginner who is just about growing sick of more mild flavored cigars will find this Dunhill Robusto’s great complex flavor a fantastic reward for his bravery.
