Dunhill Robusto Cigars

Tobacco for cigar in Cuba

Image via Wikipedia

Dunhill Cigars is a British company that are known for their extremely high quality hand made cigars.  While the Dunhill Cigars range originally came from Cuba, Dunhill had a huge disagreement with Cubatobacco, the Cuban state cigar company. As a result of these heated negotiations, Dunhill were forced to look elsewhere for the high quality tobacco they needed to manufacture Dunhill cigars.

Now Dunhill source their tobacco from all over the world. There is a preference for the fine tobaccos grown in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, but Dunhill are known to go as far afield as Cameroon to find tobacco that lives up to their high standards of smoking quality and fine flavor.

The Dunhill Nicaraguan Signed Range Robusto is a truly global cigar. While, as the name suggests, it’s handrolled in Nicaragua, the filler is a blend of fine tobaccos from both Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. The binder is from Cameroon.

You can tell right away that the Dunhill Robusto is a premium cigar. The quality and appearance of the construction are undeniably perfect. Some real skill and care has gone into the rolling of this cigar. The wrapper is a deep, rich mahogany colour, and the smell is a faint cedar blended with a high quality red tea.

Like all fine cigars, the Dunhill Robusto develops in flavor as it smokes. It begins with a faint leather flavor, mingled with a sweet hit of Belgian chocolate.  There is also a deep and complex spicy note, with a dominant flavor of cinnamon. The cinnamon sweetness lingers on the palate after each puff. As the cigar develops, a more cedar dominant profile comes to the fore, and the cinnamon aftertaste continues. The Dunhill finishes with a milky coffee flavor which rounds off the cigar nicely.

As you can see, this is a truly complex cigar, like most in the Dunhill range.  There are some really distinct and dramatic flavor changes as the cigar develops, which as all smokers know is a sign of the very highest quality cigar. The cigar works well with a deep, rich espresso coffee, or high quality white rum. I’d recommend Havana Club if it’s available where you are.

The delicious taste of the Dunhill Nicaraguan Signed Range Robusto is proof that Dunhill haven’t lost any of their talent for making fine cigars in making the jump from Cubans to a more international blend, and this change will please American smokers who can now get their hands on the entire Dunhill range without resorting to clandestine means.

Dunhill have a special talent for making a full flavored cigar that isn’t too strong. While the Robusto falls into the “medium to full” strength category, it’s definitely not one that should be reserved for extremely experienced smokers like other Robustos.  A brave beginner who is just about growing sick of more mild flavored cigars will find this Dunhill Robusto’s great complex flavor a fantastic reward for his bravery.

Perdomo Cigars

HAVANA - FEBRUARY 24: A model hands out the ...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

Tablacateria Perdomo is a relatively new cigar company that has quickly gained a great reputation for their high quality Nicaraguan cigars. Perdomo Cigars started in a Miami garage in 1992, but they now own a huge facility in Nicaragua that is famed for producing consistently high quality cigars. Perdomo now have a reputation for producing the finest cigars to come out of Nicaragua. I was lucky enough to try two of their most delicious cigars, the Perdomo Lot 23 Churchill, and the Perdomo Natural Double Corona.

In common with the rest of the Perdomo Lot 23 Line, the Lot 23 Churchill is made entirely from tobacco that has been fermented for one year and bale aged for at least three years. It’s this comprehensive aging process, unparalleled by other Nicaraguan cigar manufacturers, that gives the Perdomo Lot 23 Churchill it’s distinctively smooth flavor.

The Lot 23 has a taste where nutty aromas dominate. A delicious blend of hazelnuts and cashews is the most prevalent flavor. There is a slight sweetness which doesn’t overpower the savory nuttiness, and the aftertaste has a vaguely hints at a peppery spiciness. There’s also a very delicate cedar flavor present. This isn’t the most complex or unique cigar. It doesn’t offer an exploration of new avenues in flavor. If you’re well versed in the smoking of high quality cigars, you’ll no doubt be very familiar with the flavors exhibited here. However, despite the lack of innovation, the PerdomoLot 23 is a fantastic variation on an established theme. Unless you’re expecting an exotic or complex flavor, you’re unlikely to be disappointed with this consistently high quality cigar.

The PerdomoNatural Double Corona is a very different beast.  There is absolutely no lack of complexity in this large, delicious cigar. Exhibiting all the fine qualities that make the Lot 23 a great cigar, the Double Corona has that little bit extra necessary to propel a cigar into legendary status. The depth and complexity of flavor is simply astonishing.

It begins with a strong peppery blast that doesn’t last more than a couple of puffs. As soon as the cigar starts burning in earnest, the Double Corona settles down into a rich, creamy flavor. Like the Lot 23, the dominant flavor is a delightful blend of toasted nuts, but in addition to this nutty deliciousness is a vivid canvas of flavor. There’s a faintly detectable hint of spice, and a varied range of citrus flavors that seems to morph and blend on the palate. There is also a woody note that’s difficult to define. It seems to change with each puff, from cedar to sandalwood and back again.

These Perdomo cigars are both absolutely delicious. While the Lot 23 is a consistently solid and dependable cigar that will never let you down in terms of quality and flavor, the Perdomo Natural Double Corona is a very special cigar. The delicious subtleties of flavor offer an intriguing smoking experience.  Whatever Perdomo cigar you choose, you’ll find a satisfying smoke.

Nub Connecticut

Nub Connecticut is a new kind of cigar. They are based on the concept that while most cigars have “a sweet spot”, a point in the cigar where the smoke has the finest flavor, Nub Connecticut cigars are 100% sweet spot. That means that every single puff has the same fantastic taste as the one before. It’s an admirable aim, but did they achieve it? To determine this, we’re going to have a close look at two of the cigars in the Nub Connecticut range: the Nub Connecticut 354 and the Nub Connecticut 460.

On first impressions, you can tell that the Nub Connecticut 354 is a very well constructed cigar. The wrapper is made of Connecticut shade. It’s smooth, with no veins, and is incredibly well rolled. It really is a masterpiece straight out of the box. Before you even light up the Nub Connecticut 345, you can already tell that it’s a very special cigar. When you light it, the first thing you notice is the smooth, clean draw. This really is an exquisitely constructed cigar.

It doesn’t let you down on taste either. It’s fairly mild, but definitely not tasteless. Sweet, earthy tobacco notes are coated in cocoa and nuts. It really is smooth, creamy and just as delicious as it sounds. A rich buttery finish is also apparent.  It’s the kind of flavorful smoke that would suit anyone’s smoking palate. Whether they are a fan of strong, flavorful cigars or a mild relaxing smoke, they’ll find something in this fine cigar that will give them a great deal of pleasure.

The Nub Connecticut 460 is reputed to be the finest of the range, and after smoking one of these beauties I found myself agreeing. It’s with the Nub Connecticut 460 that their promise of an “all sweet spot” cigar is really fulfilled. I couldn’t believe how quickly this cigar developed a rich and complex flavor. The dominant taste is a rich, creamy butter but there’s also a strong cedar flavor. The most intriguing element of this complex flavor profile, however, was the rose wine that I could detect faintly in the aftertaste.

When the cigar is almost finished, a delicate spice comes into the mix. It’s that familiar peppery flavor that you often get in high quality cigars, and makes for a fantastic end to the smoke.

The Nub Connecticut 460 and Nub Connecticut 354 definitely live up to the hype. There’s something quite special about these small, unusually shaped cigars.  While they might be small in stature, they have a very wide gauge. Despite being just four inches long, they puff continuously for over an hour. Nub Connecticut cigars come very close to achieving their aim of being a consistently enjoyable smoking experience right the way though. While they might not be “all sweet spot” (a noble, yet impossible goal), they certainly have a much longer peak of smoking enjoyment than any other cigar that I’ve tried. You’d be hard pushed not to enjoy these fine pair of smokes.

Backwoods Cigars

A semi-airtight cigar storage tube and a doubl...

Image via Wikipedia

Backwood Cigars are another brand of machine made cigars that defy expectations about quality and flavor. There aren’t many cigars that you can buy for less than a dollar that leave you feeling like you’ve spent your money wisely, despite how cheap they are. When you buy Backwoods Cigars, for less than five dollars for a pack of five, you feel like you’ve made a complete steal!

Recently, Backwoods Cigars have made a change in their product line that hasn’t proved very popular among consumers. They’ve dropped the amount of cigars in the pack from eight to five, while keeping the price the same. Naturally this has left a lot of smokers unhappy. What most people don’t appreciate is the fact that Backwoods Cigars have actually improved the quality of the cigars. While it’s true you are getting fewer cigars for your money, they are actually of a slightly higher quality. It is a cost cutting move by the company, but it’s not as dramatic as might be initially supposed.

The most popular cigar in the Backwoods Cigars range is the Sweet Aromatic. This delicious little stick has an unassuming exterior.  It doesn’t look like much, but when you have that first draw you can tell that it’s absolutely packed with a natural and delicious tobacco flavor.  Completely absent are the garish and tacky fruit flavors of their competitors. With the Backwood Cigars Sweet Aromatic, all you’ll find is pure and natural tobacco delight.

Buy High Quality Cigars, Pipe Tobacco and Bluts at BNB Tobacco

However, when Backwoods Cigars do artificial flavors, they do it very well. The Backwoods Honey Berry is one of the most delicious cigars on the market with an added flavor infusion.  While it comes in a very bright, artificial pink package, the flavor is anything but artificial. It’s rich, smooth and subtly fruity, with a honey sweet aftertaste.

Even if you were the kind of guy who has a huge prejudice against machine made cigars, you’d definitely do well to investigate Backwoods Cigars. They’re absolutely perfect for the smoker who, for whatever reason, doesn’t want to take the plunge and buy an expensive hand made cigar. Don’t get me wrong, Backwoods Cigars are never going to compare favorably to a fine Cuban, or even a fairly cheap Dominican headbanger, but if you manage your expectations you’ll find nothing but a delightful, delicious and great value smoking experience.

If you can get past the fact that you used to get three cigars more in the pack for the same price, then you’ll find the current incarnation of Backwoods Cigarsto be a far greater quality smoking experience. The draw is smoother, the construction is almost always perfect, and the taste is superior across the whole range. It’s just got a far more impressive depth of flavor then when there were eight in the package. These great smokes will only disappoint those who stubbornly value quantity over quality. If you appreciate a good cigar for a great price, then Backwoods Cigars should be your first port of call.

Zino Cigars

A pack of Davidoff Classic cigarettes

Image via Wikipedia

Zino Cigars a super premium cigar range from Davidoff, the Swiss cigar makers of some renown.  Davidoff are known for their extremely high quality smooth smoking cigars, mild enough for a beginner yet complex enough to evoke a mystique in even the most experienced cigar smokers. Their Zino Cigars range is named after Zino Davidoff, the snappily named and snappily dressed founder of the Davidoff Company. Zino Davidoff had quite a reputation for being a smooth talking ladies man, and these smooth cigars don’t let him down one bit, although they aren’t necessarily for the ladies!

The Zino Platinum Crown Series Chubby is a fantastic looking cigar, with that beautiful torpedo shape that we all love. This really is one of the most beautiful looking cigars on the market, with an amazing presentation. The wrapper is flawless, and there is a pair of fantastically designed bands to let you know that you’re holding one of Zino’s finest in your hand.  The construction and build quality of the cigar is flawless, which is difficult to achieve with the torpedo shape. However Davidoff carry it off admirably.

It’s important to note that despite it’s beauty, it’s smooth draw and it’s delicious taste, the Zino Platinum Crown Series Chubby might not have the strength and complexity to appeal to the most experienced and demanding cigar smokers. While the quality is indisputable, and the taste is phenomenal, you’re really looking at quite a straightforward cigar. There is a delicious taste of cedar and pepper, but there aren’t the wild twists and turns of flavor that will satisfy the most demanding consumer. However, if you are a beginner, and you can afford it, there is literally no better cigar. Even the more mild Cubans don’t really measure up in comparison.

Buy High Quality Cigars, Pipe Tobacco and Bluts at BNB Tobacco

If you’re a more experienced cigar smoker, you might be more suited to the Zino Classic No. 8.  Unlike the Platinum Crown Series Chubby, the Zino Classic No. 8 does have that complexity necessary to satisfy more experienced smokers. The taste starts off with a deep cedar tone, and then switches to intense floral notes half way though. The difference between each part of the cigar is marked with by a dramatic shift in flavor, which is the kind of intriguing characteristic that appeals to more experienced smokers. The taste is still mild in comparison to more full-bodied cigars, but it’s easily interesting enough to appeal to most.

Whether you choose the Platinum, the Classic, or any of the other fine cigars in the Zino Cigars range, you’ll know that you hold a bit of cigar history in your hand. These fine cigars are jewel in Davidoff’s crown, and they’ll be the jewels in the crown of your humidor.  If you choose to indulge in Zino Cigars, you’ll find a smoking experience that truly inflames the senses. Zino Cigars are a journey as well as a destination. If you’re on a quest for optimum smoking pleasure, you’ll find them to be the object of your desire.

Game Cigars

Four cigars of different brands (from top: H. ...

Image via Wikipedia

Game is a brand of inexpensive machine made cigars produced by Garcia y Vega for the US market. They are fairly ubiquitous in convenience stores and gas stations. I was personally intrigued by what I’d heard about Game Cigars.  I’ve been looking for a cheap, quality after work smoke for a while, but I’ve been pretty unimpressed by machine made cigars so far. They seem to have a large amount of quality control issues, and a narrow range of flavors for the most part.  I’d heard online that the brand of machine made cigars with the best reputation was Game Cigars, so I decided to try them.

The first one I picked up was the Game Vanilla. It’s filled with tobacco from the Dominican Republic, and it’s wrapped in delicious Connecticut leaf. If you’ll pardon the pun, it’s the smell that immediately gives away the game. This isn’t your typical machine made, flavored cigar. As soon as the wrapper was opened, my nostrils were filled with a deep, intriguing aroma of vanilla and rich spice. I couldn’t wait to spark this baby up.

Buy High Quality Cigars, Pipe Tobacco and Bluts at BNB Tobacco

I lit the cigar and gently inhaled, it’s sweet, creamy smoke caressing my throat before I expelled a puff of flavorful smoke. I felt absolutely no disappointment. The Game Cigar smoked fabulously from the very first draws, and filled my senses with a sweet, natural vanilla taste. The flavor wasn’t that sickly, unnatural taste you get from most flavored machine made cigars. It was pure, it was natural, and it blended subtly with the tobacco.  My verdict is that the Game Vanilla is a delicious cigar for discerning smokers on a budget.

Sometimes a large cigar is a little bit too much for busy times in the day. If I’m having a ten-minute smoke break at work for example, a cigar isn’t feasible. Telling your boss you’ve been outside smoking a cigar for the last half hour doesn’t really wash very well in most jobs!

That’s why there are also Game Cigarillos, with all the flavor of Game Cigars in a much smaller portion. They come in many of the same delicious flavors of their full sized cousins, with all of the same great smoking pleasure in each and every stick.  I tried the Peach Game Cigarillo, and I wasn’t disappointed with a single aspect of the subtle, fruity flavor.  While I admit the cocktail of tobacco and peach sounds somewhat unnatural, the subtle flavors are more reminiscent of dry schnapps than a juicy freestone peach. It works remarkably well.

Whether you find your smoking joy with Game Cigars, or you fit Game Cigarillos into your busy day, you’re sure to find a tasty, machine made cigar that you can really enjoy somewhere in the Game Cigars family. They are delicious, fruity and uncommonly good.  Their great value and ubiquitous availability shouldn’t be seen as sign of low quality. If anything, it’s a blessing to get your hands on such great cigars so easily. Game cigars are a must try!

Panter Cigars

Somes Habanos Cigar - Cuban Cigars

Image via Wikipedia

Panter makes small cigars that are a little different to what you might be used to.  The overarching theme of Panter Cigars is the idea that you don’t have to be at home relaxing to enjoy a great cigar. While premium cigar brands like Punch Cigars or La Aroma de Cuba might be more suited for a relaxing evening in an armchair, Panter Cigarillos are for the smoker on the go. Panter is the brand for those of us who smoke at work, or in a restaurant, or even more active pursuits like sailing.

Panter Cigars don’t mess around, they get down to business quickly. Panters aren’t a cigar to linger over. They deliver a quick burst of full flavor straight away, and are over within five minutes. This makes them perfect to enjoy at work, at a break in the theatre, or any situation where you need to fit a full flavored smoke into five minutes.

You can tell Panter Cigars are a fine smoke just by the packaging. Each variety comes in a different well-made and durable tin. Just as fine Cuban cigars are found in their characteristic cedar boxes, Panter Cigars can be spotted quickly by looking out for their trademark tin. It’s a sign of quality.

Buy High Quality Cigars, Pipe Tobacco and Bluts at BNB Tobacco

The cornerstone of the Panter Cigarillos range is the Mignon de Luxe. These small, fine cigars are the most popular variety that Panter produces, and they have a delicious taste reminiscent of dry, bitter chocolate. There are also notes of peach Eau De Vie, which is a kind of French fruit brandy. It’s no surprises that this is the most popular cigar that Panter make, as the flavor combination stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Panter Blue is the cigarillo for those who prefer a lighter smoke.  When you open the tin, you see cigarillos with a light colour, which betrays the flavor before you even light one up.  PanterBlue has a flavor reminiscent of the typical Davidoff.  It’s a light, milky caramel, with a burnt sugar aftertaste. The smoke is always sweet, right down to the last puff.  It’s mild, smooth and a perfect choice for those migrating from cigarettes.

ThePanter Sprint is the cigarillo for experienced smokers who find strong flavors more satisfying.  It’s slightly smaller than the rest of the Panter Cigar family, but it packs in a huge amount of flavor despite the short stature.  The dominant flavor is a deep, rich espresso, but the main characteristic is the sheer strength. It’s unusual for a cigarillo to have such an intense flavor, and it’s not recommended for beginners.

There are many more cigars in the Panter Cigars range, including the long and slender Vitesse de Luxe, the exotic Panter Tango and the delightfully sweet PanterDessert.  Each cigar in thePanter Range is a delicious and intriguing smoking experience that slots neatly into your day. If you’re curious about cigarillos, then Panter truly is a great brand to start with.

Djarum

Dried cloves

Image via Wikipedia

Djarum is an Indonesian company that specialises in the manufacture of exotic flavored cigarettes, known as “kreteks.” These delicately spiced cigarettes get their flavor chiefly from the inclusion of cloves and clove oil into the tobacco blend, but there is also a proprietary mix of other spices that add to the taste significantly.

Djarum Black is the most popular flavor outside of Indonesia, and these are the ones you’ll find most widely available in US tobacconists and cigar shops. Although officially in the US clove flavored cigarettes are banned, the manufacturers of Djarum Black were able to circumvent this ban by wrapping the tobacco in tobacco leaf rather than the traditional black paper, making them technically cigarillos. Luckily this change in the formulation of the product has only lead to improvements in flavor and smoking enjoyment.

Djarum Blacks have a medium potency, with about 60% of the fill being made up of tobacco, and the remainder comprising of a delicious mix of cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. If you’ve never tried a clove cigarette before, then you might be surprised at just how delicious it is. Cloves create a thick, spicy and sweet smoke when burned, and it goes down remarkably smoothly. The additional spices add a delightful complexity to the flavor.

Buy High Quality Cigars, Pipe Tobacco and Bluts at BNB Tobacco

The other main selling point is the sweet filter. Like many brands of clove cigarettes, the filter of a Djarum Black is treated with a sweet coating that lingers on the lips as you smoke. It doesn’t make your lips sticky, it’s absolutely undetectable other than the delicious flavor that it imparts. You might find yourself licking your lips compulsively while smoking to get more of the intoxicating spicy flavor.

If you’ve already tried Djarum Black and you’re looking to explore further, then I’d suggest a pack of Djarum Cherry. As the name suggests, these are Djarum cigarettes that have been flavored with a fresh, fruity cherry flavor.  The cherry flavor is in addition to the dominant clove taste, and they work remarkably well together. Rather than being an overly sweet artificial cherry candy taste, Djarum Cherry is more like a sweet dark natural cherry flavor. It’s much closer to cherry brandy than cherry Lifesavers.

They are slightly more mild and sweeter than Djarum Black, but they have the same nicotine and tar content. They also have the same delicious sweet filter, with a spiced cherry taste that lingers on your lips.

If you’re bored with normal cigarettes or even cigars and you’re looking to try an adventurous blend of exotic spices, then Djarum Cigarettes are for you. These cigarettes are a destination in themselves, and smoking them will whisk your mind away to the Indonesian shores from which they came. Whether you opt for the fruity Djarum Cherry or the more traditional Djarum Black, you’ll find a rich, spicy clove smoke that will really get you excited. It’s the perfect way to end the monotony of your smoke breaks, and make smoking a real pleasure again.

Smokers Choice

Cigar from nicaragua

Smokers Choice is a well-respected brand from USA Tobacco that offers a large range of “little cigars”(cigarillos) and “large cigars” which are actually still fairly small.

Most American smokers will be fairly familiar with the Smokers Choice brand. Their cigars are fairly ubiquitous in gas stations and convenience stores across the country.  However, despite their ubiquity, Smokers Choice cigarsare generally ignored by most cigar fans. I think that to overlook these little beauties would be a terrible mistake. Their delicious flavor and low price make them a real competitor when you are looking for a great value smoke.

The main advantage of Smokers Choice cigars is the incredible range available. It doesn’t matter whether you fancy a full flavored smoke, something slightly milder, or something adventurously fruit flavored. Smokers Choice has the right choice for you.

The small size makes them perfect to enjoy on a smoke break or any other time where you need to fit in a quick smoke. If you’ve previously had a prejudice against cheap gas station cigars, Smokers Choice Full Flavor will open your eyes to the fact that good quality can still be great value.

While there’s no way that Smokers Choice cigars are ever going to have the depth of flavor of your favourite Romeo y Julietta or Arturo Fuente, it’s fantastic to discover that a cheap cigar doesn’t have to be terrible.  These cigars are a great choice when you want a relaxing smoke without breaking the bank.

Once you’ve tried Smokers ChoiceFull Flavor, then you can start to investigate the wide range of cigars that Smokers Choice manufacture.  As well as Menthol and Lights, Smokers Choice offers a full range of delicious fruit flavors. It’s also worth remembering that Smokers Choice offers a full range of Smokers Choice Little Cigars too. They come in all the same flavors as the original Smokers Choice cigars, but they are just a little bit smaller.  They’ve got the same delicious smooth taste, and they come in the full range of fruit flavors too.
